Satellite Tracking Reveals Nesting Patterns, Site Fidelity, and Potential Impacts of Warming on Major Green Turtle Rookeries in the Red Sea

چکیده

Major aggregations of nesting green turtles ( Chelonia mydas ) occur in the northern Red Sea, although little is known about reproductive ecology this endangered species region. To address issue, we satellite-tracked 30 female to document their movements and identify factors driving habitat use at two major rookeries Jazirat Mashabah (Mashabah Island) Ras Al Baridi Saudi Arabia. Between successive events, displayed high fidelity beaches adjacent in-water habitats (inter-nesting habitats). Using generalized linear mixed models, estimated mean probability per beach emergence (nesting success rate) be 0.628, duration between a successful event onto (re-nesting interval) 10.8 days each site. The rate was relatively (>0.8) when preceding daytime land surface temperature (LST) lower than 37°C but decreased with elevated LST (<0.4 >47°C). Re-nesting interval longer water temperatures towards end season individuals. Our study improves robustness abundance estimates from census data (e.g., track counts) shows that protection inter-nesting during breeding would an effective conservation strategy for species. We discuss how global warming could increase energy expenditure due lowered success, ultimately compromising fitness these populations.

cement is an essential ingredient in the concrete buildings. for production of cement considerable amount of fossil fuel and electrical energy is consumed. on the other hand for generating one tone of portland cement, nearly one ton of carbon dioxide is released. it shows that 7 percent of the total released carbon dioxide in the world relates to the cement industry. considering ecological issu...

Evaluation of hematological and plasma biochemical parameters in green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas Linnaeus, 1758) from nesting colonies of the northern coast the Sea of Oman

The green turtle (Chelonia mydas) has been a species of global concern for decades. As an attempt to study health status of nesting green turtles, Blood biochemistry and hematological values were obtained from 18 clinically normal, nesting female green sea turtles on the northern coast of the sea of Oman. Mean curved carapace length (CCL) was 111±4 cm with a range of 103—122 cm. Barnacles were ...

Residency and movement patterns of an apex predatory shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) at the Galapagos Marine Reserve

The potential effectiveness of marine protected areas (MPAs) as a conservation tool for large sharks has been questioned due to the limited spatial extent of most MPAs in contrast to the complex life history and high mobility of many sharks. Here we evaluated the movement dynamics of a highly migratory apex predatory shark (tiger shark Galeocerdo cuvier) at the Galapagos Marine Reserve (GMR). U...

Sea turtle nesting distributions and oceanographic constraints on hatchling migration.

Patterns of abundance across a species's reproductive range are influenced by ecological and environmental factors that affect the survival of offspring. For marine animals whose offspring must migrate long distances, natural selection may favour reproduction in areas near ocean currents that facilitate migratory movements. Similarly, selection may act against the use of potential reproductive ...

Population Structure and Diversity of Brazilian Green Turtle Rookeries Based on Mitochondrial DNA Sequences

– Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences were determined for 168 green turtles (Chelonia mydas) nesting at the 3 known rookeries in Brazil: Trindade (n 1⁄4 99), Atol das Rocas (n 1⁄4 37), and Fernando de Noronha (n 1⁄4 16). In addition, 32 green turtles were sampled on foraging grounds at Atol das Rocas and Fernando de Noronha. Significant genetic structure exists among the 3 rookeries, with haplo...
